Phosphor heat treatment involves: (a) placing a crystalline phosphor, having a crystalline matrix doped with an activator, in a closed vessel; (b) introducing a gas atmos. into the vessel to attain a pressure of 5 x 10<6> 1 x 10<9> Pa; (c) heating the phosphor at 900-1300 deg C; and (d) rapidly cooling the phosphor at at least 100 deg C/s. Also claimed is a phosphor heat treatment appts. comprising a closed pressurisable vessel, a heating arrangement and a rapid cooling arrangement. |
