Prepn. of aryl ethanoic acid derivs. of formula (I) comprises carbonylating an aryl methyl halide of formula (II) in a two phase system using a water-soluble metal complex as catalyst: R<1> = H, halo, CO (1-8C) alkyl, OCO (1-8C) alkyl, 1-8C alkyl, Ph (opt. substd. by OH or NH2); R<2> = H, 1-8C alkyl or Ph; Ar = phenyl, naphthyl, anthracenyl or phenanthrenyl (each opt. substd. by halo, OH, polyfluoro (1-8C) alkyl, CN, (1-4C) alkoxy, NO2, COO (1-4C) alkyl, CON (1-4C alkyl)2, NH (1-4C) alkyl, N (1-4C alkyl)2, NL2, SO3H, SO3 (1-4C) alkyl, SO2NH2, OCO (1-4C) alkyl, CH2-halo).
