The lamp operating circuit has a rectifier (GR) coupled to the mains network via a filter (FE) and a self-oscillating DC/AC converter, coupled to a trigger generator, with a resistor (R1), a capacitor (C1) and a voltage-dependent element, e.g. a diac (DC1). A controlled resistance, e.g. a transistor (T3) is connected in parallel across the capacitor, to provide a constant charge current, with the timing of the trigger pulses determined by a variable resistance (R2, R3) in series with the capacitor, for controlling the lamp power.
