A method for the removal of organic compounds from columns of air or water. The method utilizes a solidifying organic polymer-based filtration media (11) and activated carbon (22) placed in separate containers (1, 2) and arranged in an in-line, two phase process to extract organic compounds and metals from feed streams containing emulsified or suspended concentrations of organic contaminants by absorbing and solidifying the organics into an easily retrievable, disposable mass. The treated feed streams exit the process containing acceptable limits of the organic compounds and metals within the fluid columns to permit their free release into the environment.
