Disclosed are antibiotic compositions comprising an antibiotic and a potentiator of antimicrobial activity, including an antibiotic composition comprising an antibiotic selected from the group consisting of a beta -lactam antibiotic (e.g. methicillin) and a C11-C15 saturated or unsaturated, linear or branched aliphatic alcohol antibiotic and a potentiator of antimicrobial activity having the structure 2-hydroxy-6-R-benzoic acid, where R is a C10-C15 saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group, (e.g. an anacardic acid), and an antibiotic composition comprising a polymyxin and a potentiator of antimicrobial activity selected from the group consisting of indole, a 3-substituted indole and an alkenyl aldehyde. The composition of the present invention is able to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms using much lower concentrations of the antibiotic. The specific potentiator used in the composition of the present invention also enhances the efficacy of antibiotics against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and also against fungi, such as yeasts.
