In purifying waste water, (a) the water is brought to pH 6.5-8 by addn. of acid or alkali, and to 20 deg C. and passed through a solids filter, (b) the water is passed upwards through one or more solid bed reactors seeded with microorganisms, and (c) during passage through the solid bed, the water is treated with air or O2.
