For the control of the water level, within the drum of a washing machine, during one or more top-up cycles (a-e) between cycles, the top-up phase (NV) gives an over-filling over the top-up level (NT) range to compensate for water absorbed by the laundry in each case according to the monitored breach of the lower level (2') which requires an additional feed, together with a set time span and the number of top-up cycles being executed.
