A process for separating pre-pulverised carpet material (I) into up to 3 main components comprises (a) producing an aq. suspension of (I) by fine milling in aq. medium, (b) adding aq. salt soln. so as to adjust the density of the liq. phase to a value between the densities of two main components with densities close to one another, (c) separating the suspension in a biconical, fully jacketed, spiral centrifuge to give a fraction (1) contg. mostly one main component (A), an intermediate fraction (2) contg. the other two main components (B and C), and a liq. phase (3), (d) suspending fraction (2) in an aq. phase and adjusting the density of the liq. phase to a value between the densities of components (B) and (C), (e) separating this suspension in a centrifuge as above to give two fractions (4) and (5) contg. (B) and (C) respectively and a liq. phase (6), and (f) processing fractions (4) and (5) separately and recycling liq. phases (3) and (6) within the process.
