A buckle mechanism, for vehicle safety restraint systems, comprises a push button 14 having abutments 29 which engages with abutments 22 on rocker 6 so as to prevent disengagement of a lockbar 9 with belt tongue 26 during, for example, a crash situation. The rocker 6 is pivotly mounted, via pivot bar 7, and carries the lockbar 9 which is biased into engagement with the tongue 26 by a three pronged leaf spring 10. When inertia forces, eg at an end of a pretensioning operation, cause the button 14 to continue moving an overlock plate 11 moves with it and hook 25 on the overlock plate 11 co-operates with bar 28, thereby stopping the spurious release of the mechanism. A ramp surface 30 on button 14 has three areas of different gradients, preferably 50, 20, and 50 degs respectively, which engage at different button displacements so as to disengage the lockbar 9. At one stage during disengement one of the gradients produces lost motion between the lockbar 9 and the rocker 6 which results in spring 10 being lifted off the lockbar 9. <IMAGE> |
