A liq. contg. organic and nitrogenous materials and materials in suspension is analysed by spectrophotometry. Suspended material in the liq. (9) for analysis is broken down by physical action (8). Organic material is broken down and nitrogenous cpds. oxidised by photo-oxidn. (6). The absorption spectrum of the liq. is analysed (5) before, during and after photo-oxidn. to determine the levels of organic carbon, nitrogenous cpds. and suspended material.
