Class 23 A mixture of solid particles is suspended in a liquid and passed through one or more hydrocyclones one of which has the inlet area 7 not less than 0.12 or more than 0.4 times the area of the outlet 5 so that the coarser particles are discharged from the outlet 6 and the finer particles are discharged through the outlet 5. The diameter of the outlet 5 is between 'one-half and one-third the diameter of the cylindrical part 1, and the diameter of the outlet 6 is not greater than 0.7 times the diameter of the outlet 5. The included angle of the conical part 4 lies between 50 degrees and 90 degrees: The Specification gives dimensions of a cyclone according to the invention and of another cyclone together with a comparison of the constituents of the fractions obtained from classifying a sand and loess mixture.
