In making padded panels suitable for use as internal decoration of motor car and lorry doors, a surface material coated on the rear side with adhesive is united with a hardboard backing and an interposed padding layer by applying a high-frequency electric field while the materials forming the panel are held between metal electrodes under mechanical pressure. The surface material may be polythene, polyvinyl chloride, or leather cloth having a polyvinyl chloride nitrocellulose or linseed oil outer coating. The adhesive applied to the back of the surface material may be phenol-, urea-, or melamine-formaldehyde, polyvinyl acetate, chloride, formal, or butyral, a copolymer of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, a polyamide, polyester, or polyurethane resin, or a mixture of phenol-formaldehyde resin with polyvinyl acetate or formal. The adhesive coating is dry and insensitive to light handling at ordinary temperatures. The padding may consist of felt, sponge rubber, polyurethane sponge, or a number of superposed layers of cellulose wadding. The hardboard backing may also be coated with adhesive, e.g. polyvinyl acetate emulsion or solution, or a phenol-aldehyde resin in sheet form may be placed between the hardboard backing and the padding. |
