[Also in Groups VIII, XVII, XVIII and XL (b)] A device for giving an adjustable stroke oscillatory motion to a walking beam 17 in a packaging machine (see Group XVII) comprises a helical cam 176 driven by a motor 198 through bevel gears 178, 180, the cam causing a slider 183 to travel back and forth on rods 181. The cam, slider and rods are mounted in a housing 170 which is rotatable relative to the remainder of the device by worm-gear means 191, 193. The slider 183 carries a roller 185 which gives reciprocatory motion to a further slider 187 movable on fixed vertical rods 188. The slider 187 oscillates the beam 17 through a roller 26 attached to an arm 17<SP>1</SP> fixed on the beam pivot shaft. When the rods 181, 188 are parallel, the maximum range of oscillation of the beam 17 is produced, but as the angle between these rods is increased by rotating the housing 170, the oscillation is reduced until, when the rods are at rightangles, it is substantially zero.</p> |
