A process for defining, dewatering and desalting a slurry of a mineral such as ultrafine kaolin includes the initial step of forming a dilute, flocculated aqueous slurry containing mineral particles, water and one or more salts, a portion of the mineral particles being colloidal particles. The flocculated, dilute slurry is heated to an elevated temperature sufficient to dissolve the salts and render the slurry flowable, and is then centrifuged at a speed high enough to remove a portion of the water, dissolved salts and colloidal particles therefrom to form a concentrated slurry, wherein the amount of water removed is such that the slurry remains flowable at the elevated temperature. The process is repeated two or more times in order to desalt the slurry to a desired level of purity.

|
