PURPOSE:To provide an optically active sulfonium compound useful as an agent for the treatment of allergic diseases. CONSTITUTION:This sulfonium compound is expressed by formula (Y is an inorganic acid residue or an organic acid residue), e.g. R(-)[2-[4-(3-ethoxy-2- hydroxypropoxy) phenylcarbamoyl] ethyl} dimethylsulfonium p-toluenesulfonate. The(+) and the (-) optical isomers of the compound of formula I are alternately produced by the recrystallization of the racemic or non-racemic compound of formula.
