PURPOSE:To provide a cooler capable of rapidly changing the cooling ability with a cooling cylinder so as to control the admitting temperature of the resultant optical fiber to a constant value without regard to a change in the linear velocity of the optical fiber in an apparatus for drawing the optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:This apparatus for drawing an optical fiber is constituted by stretchably installing a cooling cylinder 2 in an apparatus for drawing the optical fiber so as to expand and contract the cooling cylinder 2 with an expansion and contraction driving device, measuring the coating diameter with an outside diameter measuring instrument 7 and controlling the expansion and contraction driving device based on a deviation signal for the measured value of the coating diameter from the prescribed value with a cooling cylinder controller 10 so as to expand and contract the cooling cylinder 2.
