PURPOSE:To improve the position detecting accuracy of a testee body by automatically setting up a reference pattern where an area ratio between a low level picture part and a high level picture part is optimum at the time of previously determining the reference pattern. CONSTITUTION:This pattern recognizing device having a television camera 11 for picking up the testee body, a picture processing circuit 12 for processing picture picked up by the camera 11, a reference pattern setting circuit 17 in which a reference pattern is set up and a correlation circuit 16 for comparing the picture processed by the circuit 12 with the reference pattern and detecting the position of the testee body based upon the degree of coincidence between the picture and the pattern is provided with a mask setting circuit 18 for changing an outer frame range Z for determining a pattern area for the reference picture inputted by the camera 11 and processed by the circuit 12 at the time of setting up the reference pattern and determining a picture within the outer frame range Z in which both ratios occupied by a low level image part and a high level picture part in a picture area surrounded by the range Z are approximately 50% as an optimum reference pattern. |
