PURPOSE:To prevent the transmission loss of optical fibers by the influence of hydrogen by providing a hydrogen absorbent into a connecting box for housing the juncture of the optical fibers to each other. CONSTITUTION:The hydrogen absorbent 6 is provided in the connecting box 1 of an optical fiber cable 4a. Namely, the hydrogen absorbent 6 absorbs gaseous hydrogen when the gaseous hydrogen is generated by the reaction of the moisture infiltrating into the box 1 and the constituting metal of the box 1. The infiltration of the gaseous hydrogen to the juncture 5 of the optical fiber cable 4 and the subsequent diffusion into the optical fiber cable 4 are, therefore, prevented. Since the inside of the box is maintained in a low-hydrogen atmosphere at all times by the effect of the absorbent 6, the gaseous hydrogen is always diffused in the low-hydrogen atmosphere if the partial pressure of the hydrogen in the optical fiber cable is high and, therefore, the partial pressure of the hydrogen in the optical fiber cable 4 is indirectly lowered. The increase in the transmission loss of the optical fibers is thereby prevented. |
