PURPOSE:To light a discharge lamp certinaly while the construction remains small by inserting the primary winding between the terminal of a switching element and the terminal of a charging means, and impressing a high voltage pulses generated by the secondary winding on the discharge lamp. CONSTITUTION:The primary winding 8a of a high voltage transformer 8 is inserted between the terminal of a discharge gap 7 as a switching element and the terminal of a charging means 10. The transformer 8 is connected so that the high voltage pulses generated by its secondary winding 8b are impressed on a discharge lamp 3. When the discharge 7 is in the on condition, the voltage impressed on the primary winding 8a is gas a voltage boosted as high as determined by the primary and secondary windings 8a, 8b, and is impressed on the lamp 3. The pulses have a small and narrow waveform and are impressed on the lamp 3 to cause its breakdown, and a transition is made from the glow discharge to the arc discharge condition. The voltage value having the energy required at this time is not so large, but pulses having a large width can be supplied to the lamp 3. |
