A method of stabilizing the coast (6) of a body of water, by shoreward diversion of the littoral drift (8) in the breaker zone. A drain pipe (2) buried in the bed or a strip of impermeable sheet material on top of the bed placed in a line (1) oblique to the coastline (6) increases the natural shoreward sediment transport velocity by the rate V7 in the actual travelling direction (7) of the waves. As a result, the littoral drift vector V8 is transformed shorewards into the vector Vr. A combination of at least two lines (1) converging from up- and downcoast side and meeting in one point will divert the sediment transport caused by waves from any direction. The lines (1) may be straight, broken or curved. Resulting deposition of drift material (4) at the meeting point of the lines (1) and corresponding accretions (5) of the coastline (6) at intervals along the coast resemble a natural crescentic bar system and stabilize the coast. Properly spaced from a harbour (12) or a waterway, the system (1) can prevent siltation in the harbour or waterway. |
