PURPOSE:To provide the birefringence control type liquid crystal display element whose display color is easily controlled. CONSTITUTION:The twist angle of liquid crystal 11 in a liquid crystal display cell is set to 90 deg., and the axis of transmission of an upper polarizing plate 14 is made to cross the direction of orientation treatment 8a of a lower oriented film at 130 deg., and the axis of transmission of a lower polarizing plate 13 is made to cross this direction 8a at 150. In this constitution, the display color is changed to red, green blue, black, and white in order when the voltage impressed to liquid crystal 11 is raised, and the operation range for the hue change and that for only the luminance change of achromatic color are separated in accordance with the impressed voltage. |
