PURPOSE:To provide the binary multilevel image estimating device improved in both resolution and gradation by solving the problem of generating blur (resolution reduction) at the edge part of an image and the problem of degrading the gradation because of insufficient multilevel estimation at the flat part in a conventional multilevel estimating method. CONSTITUTION:An edge part and the strength of the edge in an edge part are decided based on the number of black picture elements to be linked in a window in a maximum size to be counted by a black picture element link adding part 131 at an edge detecting part 13 and the number of lines of horizontal and vertical white picture elements to be counted by a horizontal/vertical white picture element line adding part 132, and concerning the edge part, corresponding to the strength of the edge, multilevel estimation is performed to the strong edge by the window of the small size. Thus, excess smoothing is not performed so that the resolution reduction can be decreased, and the flat part other than the edge part is smoothed by the large window so that sufficient multilevel estimation can be executed. |
