PURPOSE:To obtain a high contrast ratio by practically setting the axis of orientation of ferroelectric liquid crystal or antiferroelectric liquid crystal in parallel with the longitudinal direction or the transverse direction of one substrate. CONSTITUTION:With respect to a display element 10, oriented films 6 and 7 are formed on a glass substrate 1, where picture element electrodes 5 are formed on the surface after formation of a transparent electrode 3, and a glass substrate 2, where a transparent electrode 4 is formed on the surface, by coating, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal 8 is interposed between them. The axis or orientation or ferroelectric liquid crystal 8 or antiferroelectric liquid crystal is practically set in parallel with the longitudinal or transverse direction of one of the pair of substrates 1 and 2. With respect to production of this display element, the direction of orientation treatment or the first substrate or the liquid crystal display element is set to 20 to 30 deg. to one side as the reference of the substrate, and the orientation treatment of the second substrate is performed in parallel with that of the first counter substrate. |
