The energy supply for the standby power supply has terminals (1) to connect to the external mains power supply network and another set of terminals (2) to connect to the electrical load.The energy supply is an accumulator circuit (5) connecting together multiple accumulators (7) each having a set nominal voltage. Terminals (8,9) are provided to connect to the accumulator unit. The load (10) is connected to the accumulator unit and to the supply.While the supply is available the accumulator unit is charged via a converter. During charging the individual accumulators are connected in series. The charging current to the accumulator unit is regulated, reducing as the nominal voltage of the accumulator unit is approached.
