Copolymers of ethylene and propylene having a crystalline content of less than 20% and containing between 35 and 80% combined propylene and less than 1% by weight of low molecular weight normally liquid polymeric oils soluble in boiling acetone are made by contacting a mixture of ethylene and propylene containing from 0,5 to 5 moles of propylene per mole of ethylene in the presence of a trialkyl aluminium compound and the purple form of titanium trichloride or vanadium trichloride, and a nonpolar solvent. Solvents mentioned are heptane, octane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene. The exemplified trialkyl aluminium compound is triisobutyl aluminium.
