In the gasification of ash-containing solid carbonaceous fuels such as coal by means of a gas containing free oxygen and steam at a pressure above 100 lbs. per square inch gauge, preferably between 100 and 800 lbs. per square inch gauge, and a temperature above the fusion point of the ash, preferably between 2000‹ and 3200‹ F., steam, coal and oxygen are introduced into the upper portion of a reaction zone 10 and the product gases containing molten slag are withdrawn through an outlet 21 into a quench chamber 22 containing water to solidify the molten slag and having a gas outlet 24, the cross sectional area of the outlet 21 being between 0.4 and 0.95 times the cross-sectional area of the reaction zone 10. The walls of the reaction zone and the quench chamber are surrounded by a jacket and cooling water is circulated through the gap between the walls and the jacket. The outlet 21 is defined by an annular flange projecting inwardly from the inner wall of the reaction zone.
