PURPOSE:To provide an optically anisotropic film that contains a film of a polymer of a liquid crystal oligomer and a hard coating layer formed on this polymer film and can be used as a phase difference film having improved transparency and surface hardness and a wide angle of visibility, the manufacture of the optically anisotropic film, a laminate of this anisotropic film and a substrate, a composite phase difference plate and further, a liquid crystal display device that uses these optical components and has excellent angle of visibility characteristics. CONSTITUTION:The optically anisotropic film has positive refractive index anisotropy and contains a polymer of a liquid crystal oligomer which shows a nematic or smectic phase. At this time, the liquid crystal oligomer is selected from straight-chained or cyclic liquid crystal oligomers each of which contains siloxane units as the major constitutional units and when the numbers of the repeating units represented by the formulas I and II per molecule of the oligomer are (n) and n' respectively, each of the (n) and n' is an integer of 1 to 20 and they satisfy the following condition: 4<=n+n'<=21. Also, this oligomer is polymerized into a polymer through the terminal group of the repeating unit represented by the formula II. The objective optically anisotropic film contains a film of the polymer of such liquid crystal oligomer, the optical axis of which film is oriented almost parallel to the normal of the film, and a hard coating layer formed on the surface of this polymer film. |
