A hollow breech body (11) with a wall surface parallel to its longitudinal axis supports loading (20) and emptying (30) assemblies. The loading and emptying assemblies are fitted into a pair of longitudinal cylindrical passages formed within the walls of the hollow body.The breech body is symmetrical about its longitudinal axis, with the cylindrical passages spaced at equal distances from the axis. The loading and emptying assemblies are cylindrical in shape, and are secured in their respective passages by end fasteners. The recoil brakes of the breech are also housed in cylindrical passages formed within the walls of the hollow body.
