Stillages are loaded from the tail-board (8). The driving chain runs in a guide along the centre line of the compartment, driving a fixed shoe which has a projection acting as a stop for the first stillage (5) to be loaded and pushes on the stillage during unloading. Moveable driving shoes (32) are fitted onto the chain between pairs of dogs as each stillage is loaded. At full travel, the fixed shoe strikes a limit switch, stopping the chain. Pneumatic rams (132) controlled by the lever (135) press pads (128) against the stillage sides to squeeze them against the opposite sides (140,141) of the compartment. To unload, the lever (135) is lifted, releasing air pressure, and stillages are pushed out by reversing the chain.
