PURPOSE:To make a discharge start voltage low and power consumption small by causing auxiliary discharge between a cathode electrode and a subordinate anode electrode, and then applying a voltage to the anode electrode and causing main discharge. CONSTITUTION:Plural anode electrodes 2, one cathode electrode 4, and one subordinate anode electrode 3 are provided in a discharge tube. Prior to main discharge between the anode electrode 2 and cathode electrode 4, a cathode power source 6 is turned ON to enter a state wherein electrons are easily emitted and a subordinate anode power source 7 is turned ON at the same time or after that to cause auxiliary discharge between the subordinate anode electrode 3 and cathode electrode 4. Then an anode power source 5 is turned ON to cause the main discharge, thereby emitting lights of respective display colors. Thus, the auxiliary discharge is caused prior to the main discharge to make the discharge start voltage of the main discharge about 150V lower than that in the absence of the auxiliary discharge and also to reduce variance in the discharge start voltage. |
