PURPOSE:To provide the reflection type liquid crystal display element in the birefringence control system which has a quick responsiveness and displays a color picture. CONSTITUTION:Electrodes 13 and 18 and oriented films 17 and 19 are formed on inside surfaces of a pair of transparent substrate 11 and 12 facing each other, and oriented films 17 and 19 are subjected to orientation treatment in the same direction, and liquid crystal 21 is oriented like spray. A polarizing plate 23 is arranged on the outside of the transparent substrate 11 so that its axis of transmission crosses the direction of orientation treatment at 45 deg., and a polarizing plate 24 is arranged on the outside of the transparent substrate 12 so that its axis of transmission crosses that of the polarizing plate 23 at 90 deg.. A reflection plate 25 is arranged on the outside of the polarizing plate 24. A voltage is impressed between electrodes 13 and 18 to control the birefringence, thus controlling the display color. |
