PURPOSE:To improve a display contrast, gradation characteristic and visual angle characteristic without degrading the front contrast by specifying the haze in an optically anisotropic element which has optically negative uniaxiality and has the optical axis not perpendicular to nor parallel with the film plane. CONSTITUTION:This optically anisotropic element has the optically negative uniaxiality and has the optical axis not perpendicular to nor parallel with the film plane and is so formed that the haze measured in accordance with ASTM-D 1003-52 is <=3%, more preferably 11%. The optical axis of the optically anisotropic element is preferably inclined at 5 to 50 deg. and more preferably inclined at 10 to 30 deg. with the normal direction of the film plane. The value obtd. by multiplying the max. value of the double refraction and the thickness (d) of the optically anisotropic element is preferably in a range of 50 to 300nm, i.e., 50nm<={1/2(ngamma+nbeta)-nalpha}xd<=300nm when the main refractive indices of the refractive index ellipsoid of the optically anisotropic element are defined as nalpha, nbeta, ngamma in ascending order. |
