PURPOSE:To avoid unnecessary long time charging operation and to prevent generation of enormous volume of H2 gas while reducing power consumption by stopping the charging when the battery voltage detected upon elapse of a maximum allowable time is lower than the polarity change point voltage. CONSTITUTION:A controller 17 comprises an input interface 18 being inputted with signals from various sensors, a MOR 19, a RAM 20, a CPU 21 performing calculations based on input signals, programs and data, and an output interface 22 for delivering the calculation results in the form of control signals to the outside. An upper limit is set for the time T1 to be elapsed before reaching a pole change point depending on the residual capacity of a battery. The upper limit of the time T1 is set such that the battery voltage decreases as the residual capacity thereof increases for a constant charging current. Consequently, unnecessary charging can be avoided by stopping the charging when the polarity change point voltage is not reached due to deterioration of the battery and generation of enormous volume of H2 gas can be prevented while reducing power consumption. |
