The device comprises a rotatably and axially movable gear rod which is adjustable by a hand-operated gear lever. In an axial direction it has at least two rod sections which are joined by a link which allows rotary and axial movements. The link is formed as a rotary link with a rotary axis running vertically to the axial direction of the gear rod. The two rod sections (10,11) are joined with each other by a support bearing which has a play. The bearing axis (18) of the support runs parallel to the rotary axis (17) of the rotary link.
