A superconducting magnet comprises a superconducting coil; a cryogenic refrigerant vessel 2 containing cryogenic refrigerant 3 for refrigerating the superconducting coil; a heat shield surrounding the cryogenic refrigerant vessel 3; a vacuum vessel 4 surrounding the heat shield; a refrigerator 30 for refrigerating the heat shield; and either means 84 for detecting a difference between a pressure in the cryogenic refrigerant vessel 4 and an atmospheric pressure and controlling said pressure difference to be 0 - 0.5Kg/cm or means 85 for detecting an absolute pressure in the cryogenic refrigerant vessel 4 and controlling the absolute pressure to be 1 - 1.5Kg/cm.
