Method for enabling a user to mark items of personal property with a plurality of near-microscopic tag particles (10), each tag particle including at least one complete serial number (14) thereon. The user operates a computer (16) to generate a serial number which is repeated a plurality of times to form an indicia as an optical display (17). The optical display is optically reduced by a reduction lens system (38) and captured on film. The film is developed and cut into a plurality of tag particles with each tag particle having at least one complete serial number thereon. The user is then able to selectively mark items of personal property using the tag particles thus produced. <IMAGE> <IMAGE>
