PURPOSE:To obtain a sustained-release chemical composition making it possible to spray a chemical such as an agrochemical or a herbicide more uniformly over a desired area independently of weather and capable of allowing the chemical to effectively act over a long period without causing environmental pollution. CONSTITUTION:This sustained-release composite material pellet contains (A) a porous microparticle prepared from one or more kinds of alkoxides selected from a group of inorganic alkoxides and metal alkoxides, preferably Si(OC2H5)4 according to the sol-gel method and having a sustained-release function and an absorption function, (B) a clay mineral, sepiolite, preferably composed mainly of a hydrous magnesium silicate represented by the formula and (C) a chemical. As the component (A), a microparticle having 1.8 to 3mum size, 1200 to 2000m<2>/g specific surface are and 20 to 150Angstrom average pore size is used. This composite material pellet can be prepared by kneading (A), (B) and water, forming a wet pellet from the resultant mixture, drying-compacting or drying and subsequently sintering it and including the chemical in the resultant dry pellet.
