<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a phenyl benzoate derivative useful as a synthetic intermediate for a liquid crystal compound, etc., in high yield with simple post treatment in terms of prevention of environmental pollution, by esterifying a phenol derivative with a benzoic acid derivative in the presence of a solid superstrong acid catalyst and efficiently suppressing side reactions. CONSTITUTION:A phenol derivative such as a p-alkylphenol or a p-alkoxyphenol is esterified with a benzoic acid derivative such as a p-alkylbenzoic acid or a p-alkoxybenzoic acid in the presence of a solid superstrong acid catalyst which is activated by treating a hydroxide or an oxide of zirconium, titanium, tin, iron or aluminum with a sulfate group-containing solution to give the objective phenyl benzoate derivative.</p> |
