A process of manufacturing glass comprises heating a mixture of at least one alkali silicate in dry form with at least one silicate of a bivalent metal to the temperature required for producing a homogeneous molten mass. Na silicate preferred to K silicate with Ca and Mg as the preferred bivalent silicate. Pb and Al silicates may also be used and other constituents such as V and B compounds, Li, Bi, Cd silicates, finely divided metal such as Ag, and synthetic rubbers and resins or silicones are referred to in particular examples for making lenses, prisms, window glass, fibres and foils. |
