The procedure, e.g. for use with a coupling nut (6a) consists of cutting two or more grooves (24a) along the whole length of the nut, leaving only a thin layer of metal. The nut is then removed by breaking it into two or more sections, rupturing the thin metal layer by applying an effort to the sides of the grooves. The grooves can be cut along the nut with the aid of a milling tool which can operate in at least two directions, and the rupturing effort can be applied by a power cylinder and wedge. The milling tool can be fixed relative to the nut and be equipped with carriages to control the direction of movement of its cutting tip.
