The hair dryer (5) comprises a casing (10) with an air inlet (11) and an outlet (12). Inside there is a fan (13) for air flow, and a heater (14). A sensor (20) detects the radiation emitted by the hair being dried in order to determine the temperature. The sensor, motor and heating element are all linked to a control circuit. The motor and heating element are then controlled in response to the detected received radiation, in order to main an optimum comfortable temperature for hair drying.
