A cryostat microtome unit 1 has a separate microtome chamber 3 provided in a cryostat 25. The microtome chamber 3 is bounded by a detachably mounted wall 5 with a slot 6, through which a linearly oscillating movable object holding device 7 extends. The free area of the slot 6 is covered by a pivotably mounted cover plate 9. The cover plate 9 has an elongate opening through which an axle pin 20, which is fixed to the wall 5 extends. For sealing of the microtome chamber 3 to protect it against water vapour there is provided a seal 12 which runs around the slot 6 and on which the cover plate 9 slides. Magnets 13 are arranged at the wall 5 for retention of the cover plate 9. The wall 5 is fastened by magnet 19.
