Polycationic nucleic bases and oligonucleotides containing same, particularly C2 substituted purines, characterised in that they have the structure (a), wherein X is OH or NH2 (guanine or diaminopurine series), Z is N or CH (purines or deazapurines), and Y is a molecular grouping having affinity for the minor groove of DNA, e.g. distamycin or netropsin derivatives, berenil, Hoechst dye 33258, or a cationic polypeptide such as polylysine, polyarginine, polyornithine, or a polymer such as polyethylene or polypropylene imine.
