The sealing device consists of two lip seals of elastic material fitted one behind the other. The lips of both seals face away from the space (4) to be sealed and form a lubricant-filled buffer space (7). The sealing lip of the inner seal (1) acts as a pressure limiting or reducing valve. The outer seal is relieved of pressure in the prior art manner in that the fluid relieves the lip from inside and at the same time presses from outside via an elastomeric seal (63). The sealing device forms an additional (redundant) shaft seal becoming effective if the main seal should fail. It is used, for example, for sealing toxic or flammable fluids. A self-contained redundant shaft seal can be made by fitting two sealing devices one behind the other.
