A piezoelectric resonator for determining the magnitude of an applied force or pressure is formed as a circular diaphragm of quartz or similar piezo-material which is provided with a reinforced periphery (2) and attached to a mounting fixture (1) by adhesive (4).Electrodes (3) attached to the diaphragm centre promote vibration at its resonant frequency and the force/pressure variable (5) is applied at the level of the reinforced rim (2).The resulting response of the system which includes the shunt path (6) is such as to change the resonant frequency of the transducer and its measurement provides a direct index of the magnitude of the variable.
