Optimising playback channel for disc recording device

The method involves the use of a programmable low-pass filter (50) and a control device (130), e.g. a microprocessor, for setting the filter characteristic to an initial bandwidth value. A subsequent adjustment is made in dependence on the difference between the actual data detection error rate and a reference error rate. The control device adjusts the filter bandwidth until the min. error rate is obtained, when the actual data detection error rate is greater than the reference error rate, before repeating the procedure for a following recording track. The optimisation procedure is terminated when the actual data detection error rate for both recording tracks is below the reference error rate.
