Lubricant comprises: (a) 0.1-80% water soluble organic cpd. having at least one OH gp. per molecule; (b) 99.9-70% water; and (c) 0.5-10% (in)organic structure former to modify the viscosity. The OH-functional organic cpd. is pref. ethylene glycol, glycerol, or sorbitol. The organic structure former is a cellulose deriv.. The inorganic structure former is a pptd.. or pyrogenic silicic acid. The compsn. additionally contains 0.001-5% preservative made of quat. ammonium-halogen deriv., pref. benzalkonium chloride, or p-hydroxybenzoic acid-methyl or -propyl ester. The compsn. also contains flavouring and/or odoriferous material, pref. peppermint oil and/or citric oil.
