Method for the automatic milking of milking animals which are able to walk around freely in a living area and which can each separately approach a milking area with a milking robot and, before they have been milked, if appropriate, can be automatically identified with the aid of a computer. In this method, the computer is used to record the moment at which an animal has been milked and to determine the moment at which an animal in question enters the milking area. The computer is also used to record the amount of milk given each time an animal is milked, to calculate the time between the moment of approach and a previous milking of an animal in question, and the expected milk from that animal, and to activate the milking robot if the calculated, expected amount of milk from the animal in question exceeds a certain threshold.
