A process for preparing five-membered nitrogen heterocycles of the general formula I <IMAGE> (I) where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8 are hydrogen, R1 is C1-C10-alkyl, C1-C10-hydroxyalkyl, C1-C10-aminoalkyl, aryl, C7-C10-aralkyl and C7-C10-alkylaryl, R5 and R6 are C1-C8-alkyl, R2 and R3 together are oxygen with the proviso that R8 is hydrogen, R3 and R4 and/or R7 and R8 or R4 and R7 together are a bond, comprises reacting vinyloxiranes of the general formula II <IMAGE> (II) where R5 and R6 have the abovementioned meanings, with ammonia or primary amines of the general formula III R1-NH2(III), where R1 has the abovementioned meanings, in the presence of a compound of an element of Group VIIIb or Ib of the Periodic Table, with or without the addition of a Lewis acid, at from 20 DEG to 200 DEG C. under from 1 to 70 bar, and subsequently cyclizing in the presence of hydrogen and of a hydrogenation catalyst at from 150 DEG to 350 DEG C. under from 0.1 to 300 bar.
