A method of laminating comprises bringing together two sheets or webs 1a, 1b of thermoplastic material, or of material having a thermoplastic surface, with the thermoplastic surfaces facing one another, and with a lattice-work layer 2 between, on to a support, e.g. a hollow roll 10, at a temperature at which the webs 1a, 1b are flexible but which is lower than that required for bonding, and applying a pressure of gas or air to the outer web 1a and heating, e.g. by infra red lamps 7, to effect bonding. The pressure may be applied by suction through apertures 11 and a hollow shaft 6. The web 2 may be wire mesh or a material woven from metal or polyamide fibres and the webs 1a, 1b may be polythene, polyvinyl chloride, polyamide or polyethyleneterephthalate coated with polythene. The web la overlaps laterally the webs 2, 1b to provide gas-tightness on the surface 3 of the roll 10. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a thermoplastic sheet 1b is placed on a support comprising a heat-insulating member on a piece of wire-netting which extends beyond the member at each edge. The interlayer 2 is placed on the sheet 1b and a vertically movable frame bearing the second thermoplastic sheet 1a which overlaps the sheets 2, 1b is lowered until the sheets of the laminate engage each other. Suction is then applied to the lower face of the support and infra red heat employed to bond the sheets 1a, 1b. A similar apparatus may be used, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which air is delivered to the upper face of the laminate, but the support comprises a heat-conductive, electrically heated member. An endless perforated belt may replace the drum 10 in the first embodiment. |
